New White Paper Highlights Necessity of Daily Defragmentation

East Grinstead, West Sussex April 19, 2005--Executive Software® European branch has announced the release of a new white paper which shows that daily defragmentation is becoming more and more critical in the enterprise. New technology and decreasing costs have brought about an explosion in the size of corporate disk volumes. The white paper found that the increasing sizes of these volumes and the files that users store on them has made fragmentation more of a problem than ever.

Many enterprise IT departments rely on the manual defragmenter as a stop-gap for severe system problems, but using a manual solution to defragment every workstation, laptop and server on a daily basis is a logistical impossibility. The only workable solution for this critical task is an automatic defragmenter.

The white paper finds that using Diskeeper® to automatically defragment on a daily basis handles the performance, reliability, and stability problems caused by fragmentation. The complete white paper is available immediately at: daily_defrag_whitepaper.pdf

Diskeeper First Defragmenter to Receive Advanced Microsoft Certification

East Grinstead, West Sussex, April 13, 2005-- Executive Software® European branch has announced that Diskeeper® Server Enterprise Edition is the first ever defragmenter to achieve Microsoft® certification for Windows® 2000 Advanced Server and for Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. These advanced level certifications require stringent testing and compatibility with Windows clustering on their respective platforms.

Diskeeper Server Enterprise Edition is the fastest and most powerful enterprise class defragmentation utility specially developed to handle volumes up to 4 Terabytes. As well as defragmenting huge disks with its Terabyte Volume Engine (TVE), Diskeeper 9.0 can also defragment up to sixteen disk volumes (logical drives) simultaneously.

A recent survey revealed that thousands of customers have deployed Diskeeper on their high-capacity enterprise level servers such as cluster servers and servers on Storage Area Networks (SANs). These enterprise-level servers that require the power of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition or Windows 2000 Advanced Server have unique defragmentation needs, which is why Diskeeper developers created the Terabyte Volume Engine included with Diskeeper 9 Server Enterprise Edition. TVE is the first and only defragmentation engine designed specifically to keep up with the daily defragmentation needs of mission-critical and enterprise-level servers. Using TVE and I/O Smart™ technology, Diskeeper can defragment ultra-large volumes in the background while the server is online, ensuring high performance and rock-solid stability with no delays or long waits for defragmentation.

Martin Gourdeau of Electronic Arts stated, “We use Diskeeper on our main file server. This particular system has [multiple volumes with] about 4 to 5 TB assigned to it from our SAN and needs constant defragmenting due to heavy use. “

Diskeeper 9.0 ships as specialised editions designed for each 'flavour' of the Windows server platform and for desktop editions from Windows 95 and upwards. Diskeeper 9.0 Server Enterprise Edition is available for sale and can be purchased through your favorite reseller. Trialware downloads are also available; access here.

Rule of Thumb: Defrag Daily

Earlier in the week Microsoft’s site had featured an article on their landing page, 4 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer's Performance. In the article Microsoft mentions the problem of disk fragmentation, describing how it creates “significantly longer” system response times. They also mention the rule of thumb to defrag your system monthly and whenever:
  • A large number of files are added.

  • Free disk space nears 15 percent.

  • New programs or a new version of Windows is installed.

If you look through the history of Microsoft updates alone you’ll notice that a lot of weeks 3 or 4 updates come out. Sometimes as many as 11-18 patches need to be installed in a given week! Add to this all the installs and updates needed for other application software and you’re talking about a lot of defrag jobs!

Additionally some systems are constantly pushing the 15% free space mark. And users doing things such as web or software development, graphic design or many other tasks are routinely creating lots of files.

Microsoft is doing a great thing by promoting ways to speed up systems and educating the public on the problem of disk fragmentation. Instead of trying to maintain a monthly defrag schedule and then doing additional defrag jobs when all of these common events occur each week, one should just stick with this rule of thumb: defrag daily.
